Now the title may be a little misleading – I, in no way, shape, or form have ever been inside a Corvette, especially not the new Z06. I’ve only seen a handful of new Corvettes and those have been at car shows. But something very interesting happened when I decided to get Chinese food the other day.

You see, we usually get our Chinese food from a local place and have been doing so for quite a few years. Recently, however, their food has been lackluster. So I was tasked with the duty of finding a new Chinese restaurant to try. I agreed, because I didn’t have a choice, and merrily went about my way in getting to the new Chinese place.

I don’t live in a posh part of Northern Va., but I do see the occasional Ferrari or Lamborghini and millennials have even fitted their modified Supras with loud exhausts. So people, besides me, have nice cars around here. I shouldn’t have been surprised, but as I pulled into the parking lot of the Chinese restaurant I saw a brand new Chevrolet Corvette Z06.

I’m not a fan of American cars and I’ve seen my fair share of Corvettes, but this vehicle was just special. It was a dark, metallic gray with black trim pieces. On the inside, yes I creepily walked up to the car and stared inside, there was beautiful dark brown leather, which complemented the exterior exceptionally well.

It may have been dark, but the new Z06 left a lasting impression on me. It’s a stunningly breathtaking car and I can’t believe that it costs under $100,000. Interestingly enough, it just happened to be parked close to a Lamborghini Gallardo. As I have stated before, Lamborghinis are the supercars of my childhood dreams and I would sell the majority of my organs to drive one.

The Gallardo was finished in silver as well, but didn’t really stand out of the crowd. If anything, and this pains me to say, it looked like an expensive Audi S5. I drove home in wonderment. How could something that I have loved since 4th grade have rapidly been taken over by an American sports car? And a pretty common sports car at that.

I drove home with my mouth salivating over the General Tso’s chicken that I was craving and the idea that depreciation would one day put the Z06 into my garage. But as I got closer to my house, it hit me – I would rather have a Z06 over a used Lamborghini. Granted it was a first-generation Gallardo and its silver paint job wasn’t doing it justice, but the new Corvette has something that Lamborghinis, or other supercar automakers don’t have – its presence of innocence in the supercar world.

Now I know most of you may have read that and said, “what the hell is this guy talking about? The new Corvette is anything but innocent.” And I would agree with that, except for its ability to provide you, the lucky owner, with a feeling of being a child again.

No, I don’t mean having a thrilling sensation when driving the vehicle. I’m referring to the time when you’re in high school and the girl that you’re madly in love with is the most popular girl in the school, but she’s with the jerk-face football player because his father owns a Porsche. Have I lost you yet? Okay, I see how what I said may not have made any sense.

The Z06 is the underdog in the supercar market. It doesn’t have the largest engine, isn’t the prettiest car and definitely doesn’t have a historic name outside of the great U.S. of A. It does, however, have the innate ability to win your heart over whether you drive one or have one plastered on your wall. Everyone loves a good underdog, but it’s nice to see that an American automaker has created one that really tugs at your inner patriot.

I’m not sure what it was. Maybe it was the fact that I was hangry and finally found food or perhaps the way the clouds were parting on my beloved hometown. Whatever it was, I can definitively state that I have never been more attracted, both realistically and figuratively, to a vehicle before. Sure, I’ve daydreamed about owning a Lamborghini, but there’s no way my pockets would ever been deep enough to drive one for an extended period of time. And with offerings like the current Z06 for sale, I’m actually okay with that.

After making my way home, I took a large, scrumptious bite of General Tso’s chicken and realized that it was good. In fact, it was some of the best I’ve had in a long time. It was probably due to the Z06 that I saw because everything since then has been a little better, including mediocre Chinese food.
